Don’t Be Afraid Of Group Exercise.
I’ve trained some form of group exercise for ten years or more, so I’ve pretty much seen it all. From classes in America and Europe and for 700+ soldiers to suburban Bootcamp sessions, I’ve learned something from every situation.
If you’re new to group training, then it’s common to be a bit nervous, to begin with, I understand that. But let me quickly put your mind at rest – you are very welcome here! Typically, newbie fears fall into three categories:

FEAR NUMBER ONE: People will laugh at me
Absolutely not at my clubs, trust me. My members are way too busy negotiating their own path through the workout to waste time and energy thinking about you. As for me, the only judgement I make is that I really appreciate the effort you’ve made to show up!
FEAR NUMBER TWO: I can’t do burpees
If there’s an exercise you think you won’t be able to do, don’t worry, you’ll get the chance to learn. Whether it’s burpees, squats, push-ups or anything else, I’ll take you through the most efficient and safe way to give it a go. If you really can’t do something, for whatever reason, then the team and I always have simplified alternatives for you to get through instead. Until, one day, you find you’ve managed to do perfect burpees…
FEAR NUMBER THREE: I’ve got a knee injury
Yep, that happens. And it sometimes feels like there’s no way around it. My advice to you? Show up anyway. Come and see me for a chat beforehand. I’ve rehabilitated injured soldiers returning from war zones, so I promise I can adapt your workout for you to safely benefit from the class. You’ll be amazed by what you can achieve.

The Unique Benefits Of Training Together
Once you get over the fears, let me remind you of the benefits. Group exercise is scientifically proven to reduce stress by 26% (University of New England, 2017) and significantly boosts mental, physical, and emotional health. That’s group exercise, by the way – the same study showed these benefits don’t occur if you train on your own. So after a long day battling work deadlines or chasing after the kids, you know what you should do.
Motivation
Added motivation is another big reason to come along, especially if you’ve got a good instructor who can encourage you to go just that little bit longer or harder or faster. (That’s me!)
We’re all slaves to our smartphones these days too, which means we spend less time in other people’s company. Group exercise is a great excuse to dump the phone for an hour, forget about Facebook and mix with real people. Try it, you might like it. And you might even find the camaraderie encourages you to burn a few more calories than you thought you could.
